Kingsport Now Offers On-Demand Transit for All

One of the key advantages of living in a small city like Kingsport is easy access to public transportation. In smaller towns or suburban areas, residents often face limited transit options, relying on friends, neighbors, or infrequent rural services. In contrast, larger cities may offer more extensive transit networks, but they can also be more complex and less responsive to the specific needs of residents. Kingsport’s transit system strikes the perfect balance by providing convenient, local transportation without the hassles of overcrowded, complicated city networks.

Kingsport has long provided fixed-route bus service, which requires riders to live within walking distance of a bus stop and plan their trips according to a set schedule. Passengers must wait at designated stops, sometimes in harsh weather, making this system best suited for those with predictable commuting patterns. While fixed-route transit is efficient and reliable, it does not always meet the needs of residents who live farther from transit routes or require more flexibility.

On-demand transit, on the other hand, offers a more adaptable, ride-request-based service. Passengers can schedule pickups at their convenience through an app or call-in system, eliminating the need to walk to a bus stop or adhere to a rigid timetable. This model is particularly beneficial for small cities like Kingsport, where lower population density and diverse travel needs make traditional bus routes less practical.

For many residents without personal vehicles, on-demand transit is a lifeline. It ensures greater access to jobs, healthcare, and essential services without long waits or inconvenient stops. In larger cities, transit may be widespread but less flexible, while in smaller communities, limited transportation options can leave residents isolated. However, in Kingsport, the Kingsport Area Transit System (KATS) provides accessible, affordable transportation within city limits, helping residents meet their daily needs. While service is available throughout most of Kingsport, KATS cannot provide rides to neighboring cities.

The service can be scheduled by downloading an app and paying by card or cash. However, you can always call KATS at 423.224.2613 if you’re not comfortable with technology.

This is a service that has been a strong desire for 30 years. With the city’s continued commitment to a new transit center, modern vehicles, and friendly drivers, it’s now a reality! Kudos to Chris Campbell and the KATS team for making it happen.

*Service is limited to Mon-Fri 7:30-5:30 and serves almost anywhere in Kingsport city limits.
